S! All
Was just watching the news, next week to celebrate the 85th anniversary, Paramount is releasing Wings on DVD for the first time ever, 1st film to win the Academy award for Best Picture & probably the last time ever for a WWI aviation film.
Carl Reiner was interviewed & said he saw it in the theatre as a kid with his parents in 1927, (how old is that guy! lol) & it was the most extraordinary, exciting thing he had ever seen. From the clips I saw it looks to me like they were destroying original SPAD 13s, what a shame.
I will be picking up a copy next week.

Salut Herr Oblt. Osten !
I have two copies of "Wings" on VHS which I plan to transfer to DVD, along with copies of other old WW1 movies and documentaries.
In 1972, when I was attending the Louisiana State University of New Orleans, I had the opportunity to see a 35mm reel version of "Wings" shown at the Saenger Theatre. The Saenger Theatre was opened in 1927 and "Wings" was the premier movie shown. The reason for the 1972 showing was to celebrate the renovation of the theatre back to its original configuration and former glory, also it coincided with the numbers in the years, 1927-1972. The really interesting part of this showing was the music.
The theatre still had the original organ used to play the accompanying music in 1927 and it was still operational. The theatre owners then hired an organist to accompany the film with a copy of the original score. The organist they hired played for the original screening of the movie in 1927 at the age of twenty-seven. In 1972 he was 72 years old and actively playing organ music for churches in the New Orleans area. (Odd about the numbers all having 7 and 2 in them)
Although I did not see the performance in 1927 (HA HA) I sure am glad I did not miss the 1972 showing. The staff of the theatre were in costume for the entire time of the showing. When one entered the theatre it was like being transported back in time. Even the candy, drinks, and popcorn were priced to 1927 prices. And of course the big promotional gimmick in 1927 was the fact that this theatre was one of the first to be, "Air-conditioned for your comfort". The owners had a sense of humor for they used this same promotion in the newspaper for the run of the movie in 1972, what a hoot.
Thought you folks might enjoy the story.
Salut !

P.S. I was 20 years old at the time of this second showing.

I was lucky enough to see 'Wings' in February at the fabulous Paramount Theater in Seattle. Once or twice a year they have a series featuring silent films and I was able to catch it there. The Paramount is one of only three theaters anywhere to have a 1928 Wurlitzer 4/20 electric organ still in it's original environment. It is the original one that was installed for the opening of the theater in 1928. It's an incredible instrument and that evening it was played by Jim Riggs, and he provided an amazing soundtrack. Just giving credit where it's due. The Museum of Flight here has a Pfalz D.XII and I heard it appeared in the movie, but I never saw it.

Salut Herr Kestrel !
Another good story and lifetime experience of those types which seem to happen less and less as time goes by. Thank goodness there are people out there that attempt to keep some of these experiences alive for those whom were not around for the original experience.
Having had a similar experience many years ago I can fully appreciate your enjoyment of the viewing you experienced.
Thanks for sharing this with the Jastas.
Salut !
