S! All, I probably know some of you from the old Red Baron days when I was *ÅÅ* Trouble4u. I've been around RoF since the beta days but never really long enough to be comfortable. This is finally going to change. I'm getting serious about having fun and flying the virtual skies of France once again like the good old days.

Hey guys, my real name is Kenny. Been playing ROF for about a year now, ROF was my first for the most part and that kind of snow balled into playing everything else I could get my hands on but ROF is still my main squeeze for the most part.
I look forward to flying with you guys(I have already with many hehe.)

Salute Comrades, just wanted to say hi to all and confirm that i am not a bot. I will however be posting some material on our Skies of the Empires campaign 1919 (SoE) which are loosely based on the fact that Germany won WW1 & the USA assisted by a Condor Legion attacks & invades Canada. Strange? yes indeed, very - just wait till you find yourselves escorting Brequetts in Fokkers instead of destroying them! Campaigns are run on full real settings and everthing is geared for a fun, competitive and totally realistic scenario. Cheers

Who, who, who, who, who, who let the squirrel in? Who, who, who, who, who, who let the squirrel in? Who, who, who, who, who, who let the squirrel in? What we have here... is a failure... to control infestation. Hi. I'm not a bot, and I don't spam unless somebody starts a number of posts contest. So don't worry, only most of the rumors about me are true.

Hi Black Haze,
My name is Eric I'm 36 and I've been flying sims most of my life.
Some of the first sims I flew where 1942 BattleHawks and Their Finest Hour. I cut my online teeth in Warbirds for 2 maybee 3 years. There where a few of really good trainers there. One was more technique he taught me about keeping your eyes on the target, flat scissors, high an low yo-yo's, etc. The other was more philosophy he got me thinking about lag vs lead vs pure pursuit and energy fighting.
From there our squad moved to Aces high spent a few years there. However I out grew the game. I was looking for something different. I needed more.
I found Rise of Flight. I like that you have to be aware of your fuel mixture, engine temp, over reving the prop, wind and weather. Aces High was throttle and pitch control and warbirds was just throttle. Flew PWCG last winter but was looking to shoot down other people again. Started flying online around Thanksgiving found the Wargrounds server and loved it. I don't mind flying alone but was looking for some guys to fly with. That's how I found you guys or you found me.
After flying with you guys last night I figured it was a good fit. Reminded me of some of the guys I flew with in the past. I also noticed that when I fly alone I have no problem figuring out where I am. When I'm a wing man i wasn't paying attention so there was a couple of time I wasn't sure where I was. That I know I can fix. Thats why I escorted dudley on his photo recon. to get some practice flying wing and knowing where I am.
I do have problems flying the DR1 but I'm sure its just a matter of practice. I never flew either the Pfalz's before so I don't know how I am in them.
As for me. I'm a machinist. I'm obsessed with golf mostly because I'm bad and want to be good at it. I can birdie one hole and get a 10 on the next. I do some sporting clay, I go conoeing/camping/fishing with friends, some times we go to the Quetico which is the Canada side of Boundary Waters.
As far as what Jasta to fly I have no preference.
Looking forward to flying with you guys S Razwald

Hi Raz, enjoyed hearing you last night and flying with you. You seem like a good fit for our group, I hope you will stay. We have a wonderful group here and I am very pleased and proud to be with BH for the last couple of years. You can go back and read in the forum some of the past adventures and it will give you a good snapshot of some of the happenings, but the one thing is that the guys here really do stick together. I don't know of anyone here that is "kill crazy" and will be cutting in front of you for points. That's what makes it fun, it's all teamwork. Welcome to the forum, look forward to seeing you on sometimes and DUDE... you are no long the new guy.

Welcome to the forum, look forward to seeing you on sometimes and DUDE... you are no long the new guy. I'm not concerned with kills. How ever in past sims during orginized events I have a knack of not getting killed. Quick example in Warbirds I was tail end Charlie flying a F6F Icons set to 1000 ft i see contacts diving from 4 o'clock I call break left. When they came into range it was KI-84's waited till the last one past broke back into them. I see 1 KI-84 and no one else. Ki-84 broke into the cloud bank. Go to coms find out everyone went into a defensive spiral and are one the deck I spiraled down and was able to get a couple while clearing tails. Aces High was the same everyone went straight for the deck. I hate to give up my altitude advantage. You guys can have all the kills you want. I just want my altitude. The other thing, don't know how that is scored here but I would rather land safe to make sure the enemy doesn't get a free point then get a kill to get a point for myself. Although I have had tunnel vision a couple times but who hasn't. I followed Dudley around on some recon and bombing missions. Thanks for that. I can dogfight but the finer points of the game I need help. Understanding what is actually going on and ignoring the bells and whistles that don't matter is what I need help at.

I know how you feel about the DR1. It's a bit of a bear, but once you get the knack it can be the deadliest thing in the air. I found that practicing steep turns in the form of an eight (a steep turn to the left for a full circle followed by an immediate steep turn to the right and repeat) at tree top level helps get rudder, aileron and pitch combo right. The trees are a good attitude reference and will indicate right away if it's being done wrong :-)
The only thing that can out turn a DR1 is the Camel however, as Hawkeye once pointed out the DR1 out-rolls the Camel, so by forcing the Camel into a horizontal yo-yo it can be beat. I always get a couple of eights in over the trees to get the motion right before going hunting.
Some pointers: In a left turn, if the nose is not kept level or below the horizon, it will refuse to turn... In a fight if this happens, I immediately reverse the turn to regain speed and momentum. in a right turn left (top)rudder inputs are required to keep the nose from dropping too steeply. In a horizontal tail chase it will not catch anything and if the engine is pushed over 1,500 rpm, the engine will oil. Using the blip switch, the DR1 can dive straight down vertically from any altitude.
The Camel is its true opponent and a fight between two good pilots will usually end up at ground level. At treetop level, a Camel has a slight advantage in turn radius and its usual tactic is to swoop down bring the nose up (left or right) and do a climbing super-tight turn (probably beyond what the real plane could do) and swoop down again. I find I can counter it by staying in the turn with the Camel but not following it in the climb, keeping the nose level and the turn as tight as possible. That keeps the DR1 on the tail and I find it unsettles the Camel drivers and they start to make mistakes.
If locked into a steep turn and the Camel is well handled, it will slowly gain and start to get behind the DR1. Quickly reversing the turn takes advantage of the DR1's superior roll rate and brakes the pattern. That's where the steep eights practice comes in. Those are my pearls of wisdom for the day. S!
